Bulk Upload Overview

How to use the Measure upload workbook

You can load data into Measure in bulk with a single Excel workbook. The workbook has six tabs, which must keep these exact names and appear in this order:

  1. Tags: facilities and other groupings, plus their traits

  2. Activities: your sources of emissions

  3. Consumptions: usage data for each activity

  4. Emission Factors: any custom factors you want to supply

  5. Renewables: RECs, EACs and PPAs

  6. Metrics: intensity denominators such as square footage

You don't need to fill in every tab. Leave a tab empty if you have nothing to load for it, but keep the tab and its column headers in place.

Before you start

Make sure you're in the right organization. The workbook doesn't say which organization it belongs to. Data loads into whichever organization you're working in when you upload, so check before every upload.

Get an export of your existing data if you've uploaded before. Measure matches uploaded rows to existing records by their identifiers. To update a record rather than create a duplicate, you need to reuse its exact identifier. Retrieve this data using the Inventory Snapshot report.

How each tab is identified

Measure decides whether a row is new or an update based on its key:

Tab

Key

Tags

type + name

Activities

ref_id

Consumptions

activity_ref_id + ref_id

Emission Factors

activity_ref_id + ref_id

Renewables

ref_id

Metrics

name + tag_name + measured_at_period

If every part of the key matches an existing record, that record is updated. If any part differs, a new record is created. On the Consumptions and Emission Factors tabs, the same ref_id under two different activities makes two separate records.

General formatting rules

  • Dates are always YYYY-MM-DD.

  • Don't add, rename or reorder the required columns.

  • Don't add an organization or ID column. Measure fills these in.

  • Identifiers are case-sensitive and space-sensitive. See Naming conventions and allowed characters.
