When to use this tab
Only fill in this tab when you are supplying your own emission factors. Measure assigns most factors automatically. See Custom Emission Factors for when a custom factor makes sense.
Columns
Column | Required | Description |
activity_ref_id | Yes | The ref_id of the activity this factor applies to |
ref_id | Yes | Identifier for this factor, unique within its activity |
intensity_source | Column required, value optional | Where the factor came from |
method | Yes |
|
starts_at | Yes | Start of the period the factor is valid for (YYYY-MM-DD) |
ends_at | Yes | End of the period (YYYY-MM-DD) |
gas.name | Yes | The gas, for example |
gas.resource | Yes | The resource the factor is expressed per |
gas.factor | Yes | A number, a space and a rate unit, for example |
Key: activity_ref_id + ref_id
The three gas. columns repeat once for each gas. There's no limit on how many gases a row can have.
Example: a single combined factor
activity_ref_id | ref_id | intensity_source | method | starts_at | ends_at | gas.name | gas.resource | gas.factor |
denver-office-electricity | denver-office-electricity-2025-01-01-2025-12-31-location-based | Utility disclosure 2025 | location-based | 2025-01-01 | 2025-12-31 | CO2e | electricity_purchased | 0.52 kg/kWh |
denver-office-electricity | denver-office-electricity-2025-01-01-2025-12-31-market-based | Utility disclosure 2025 | market-based | 2025-01-01 | 2025-12-31 | CO2e | electricity_purchased | 0.52 kg/kWh |
Scope 2 activities, such as electricity, need both a location-based and a market-based row. When your source only provides one value, use it for both, as shown above.
Example: a breakdown by gas
activity_ref_id | ref_id | intensity_source | method | starts_at | ends_at | gas.name | gas.resource | gas.factor | gas.name | gas.resource | gas.factor | gas.name | gas.resource | gas.factor |
boiler-1 | boiler-1-2025-01-01-2025-12-31-default | Supplier | default | 2025-01-01 | 2025-12-31 | CO2 | volume_fuel_combusted | 2.68 kg/l | CH4 | volume_fuel_combusted | 0.0001 kg/l | N2O | volume_fuel_combusted | 0.0000221 kg/l |
Factor values in these examples are illustrative.
Rules
The space in gas.factor is required.
2.68 kg/lworks,2.68kg/ldoesn't.The factor's unit must match the resource. A factor for
volume_fuel_combustedneeds a per-volume unit, such askg/lorkg/gallon.Keep each set of gas columns for one gas. If the first set holds CO2 on one row, keep CO2 in the first set on every row. Measure accepts mixed columns, but the sheet becomes hard to read.
Use the right method for the category. Scope 2 activities need both location-based and market-based. s3.8 and s3.13 can also use them if desired. All other categories use default. See Custom Emission Factors.
We recommend the ref_id
<activity_ref_id>-<starts_at>-<ends_at>-<method>.
Older format
Older workbooks used four columns per gas, such as co2.magnitude, co2.emission_unit, co2.activity_unit and co2.resource. Measure still accepts this layout, but only for CO2, CH4, N2O and CO2e. Use the current gas.name, gas.resource and gas.factor layout for new uploads.
