What is Measure?

An overview of the Measure platform and how your data flows through it.

Measure turns your organization's energy, fuel and other activity data into a greenhouse gas inventory. Your data moves through five stages. Your Green Project team handles setup, and you can do most of the rest yourself.

1. Set up your inventory

Your Green Project team creates your organization, facilities and activities. An activity is one source of emissions at one facility, such as the electricity meter at a site. Your organization's preferences set when your inventory year starts, which years are active, and which GWP version to use: AR4, AR5 or AR6.

See Roles, endorsements and user access for who can see and change what.

2. Add your data

  • Utility bills: upload them with Add Bills, and Measure reads the dates and usage for you to review. See Bill upload and OCR.

  • Anything else: enter usage by hand on the activity, and attach the bill or source file.

  • Large or historical data: your Green Project team uploads it in bulk.

3. Measure calculates emissions

Measure picks an emission factor for each activity based on what it is and where it is, such as the grid region for electricity. It does this for every year that's active (Active inventory periods). Scope 2 is calculated two ways, location-based and market-based, and renewable energy you've recorded counts toward market-based. Your Green Project team can set a custom emission factor where a default doesn't fit.

4. Review

  • Emissions Analysis shows totals by scope, your top emitters and how emissions change over time.

  • Inventory Data lists every activity and its consumption records.

  • Flags point out activities with a missing emission factor or gaps in their data. For some categories, your Green Project team can estimate missing months.

5. Report

  • The Measure Data Export gives you every record with its emissions in a spreadsheet. See Reports.

  • Response Hub, if your organization has it, drafts answers to surveys and disclosures from your Measure data and your uploaded Knowledge Base documents.

How it works in Measure

Who can see your data

Only users added to your organization, plus Green Project staff who support your account. Which products appear depends on what your organization is set up for.

Who can change your data

View-only users can't change anything. Users with the Operator Manager role can add and edit consumption records and bills. Your Green Project team manages facilities, activities, bulk uploads and emission factor settings.

Record of changes

Measure doesn't currently show a history of changes to records, and deleted records are removed permanently. Download a report each time you finalize an inventory, so you keep a record of what was reported.

Source documents

Bills and supporting files are attached to the consumption record they support. The Measure Data Export lists each record's attached file, with a link to the record.

How emissions were calculated

The Measure Data Export shows each record's emission factor, its source, the grid region where relevant, the GWP version, and CO2e. Its Emissions Detail sheet breaks that down by gas.

Actual or estimated

Each record is marked Actual or Modeled. Months with no data show as Gap.

Closing a year

Taking a year out of your active periods stops emission factor updates. It doesn't lock the data. See Active inventory periods.
