Why does renewable energy matter?
For most businesses, electricity consumption is one of the largest sources of emissions — often making up the majority of Scope 2 emissions. When that electricity comes from fossil fuels, every kilowatt-hour adds to your footprint and, by extension, to your customer's supply chain emissions.
Switching to renewable energy is one of the most impactful steps a company can take. It's also increasingly a requirement, not a nice-to-have. Customers, regulators, and ESG frameworks are all moving in the same direction: suppliers who can demonstrate they're powered by clean energy have a competitive advantage, while those who can't may be at risk of losing business.
What are EACs?
Environmental Attribute Certificates (EACs) are the simplest way to meet renewable energy requirements. Here's how they work:
When a wind farm or solar farm generates electricity, a certificate is created for each unit of clean energy produced. You can purchase these certificates, and each one lets you claim that clean energy was added to the grid on your behalf.
This isn't just an accounting exercise. Every certificate represents real, clean energy that was generated. By purchasing EACs, you're directly funding renewable energy production and driving demand for more of it. It's a globally recognised mechanism used by companies of all sizes.
What EACs do for you
Reduce your Scope 2 emissions on your reported footprint
Meet your customer's renewable energy requirements
Strengthen your supplier profile and competitive positioning
Contribute to the broader energy transition
Your customer's requirements
Your customer's specific renewable energy requirements are displayed in this section — for example, the percentage of your energy that must come from renewable sources. Meeting these requirements directly improves your standing as a supplier and can open the door to new business.
How to meet the requirements using act50
We've built a tool called act50 to handle the process for you.
If you already buy clean energy: Upload your proof (e.g. your renewable energy contract or existing certificates) and you're done.
If you don't buy clean energy yet: act50 will build a bundle of renewable energy certificates tailored to your needs:
Tell us how much energy you use
Click Buy
You're guaranteed to meet your customer's requirements
There is a fee associated with purchasing certificates. The entire process is handled on the platform — no complex procurement, no switching energy providers, no lengthy setup.
Getting started with act50
To set up your act50 account and complete the requirement for renewable energy:

Review the Terms & Conditions: When you first log in, you’ll be asked to review our platform Terms & Conditions. Scroll to the bottom and click “Agree” to confirm your agreement.
Enter Your Facility Data:
In the sidebar, navigate to the Facilities screen. Enter your facility location information, including name, address, and country, and electricity usage data by year.
You have two choices for entering facility data, either individually by facility (image above) or in bulk for all facilities (below) using our bulk upload template.
❗Note: You can also upload external EAC purchases to each facility. For more information on this please see point F below.
Build Your Cart:
Go to the Reduction screen and click “Customize & Buy” for your product bundle of choice. If you’ve signed up for the platform through your purchaser’s or service provider’s campaign, you’ll see a “Purchaser” bundle (like Purchaser: GPT below) specially created by them to include only products that meet their specific criteria, which you can then “Customize & Buy”.
Next, select your “Reduction Year” – the year of electricity usage you’re looking to cover with renewable energy – and update the percentage of usage to cover at each facility.
Complete Your Purchase:
When ready, choose your preferred currency (note, if you’re paying via bank payment, you must choose USD to transfer from US-domiciled banks and EUR to transfer from EU-domiciled banks).
Next, click “Proceed to Payment” on the Reduction screen. If you’re eligible for custom pricing or if additional product requirements apply, you’ll be shown a “Submit Request” button instead, and we’ll contact you shortly to assist with your purchase.
Review your Company name for your Retirement Statement (note, this cannot be changed), approve the statement, and “Continue to Payment”. You will have the choice to pay by credit card or bank payment.
Check Your Order Status
Congratulations! You’ve placed your order. You will receive a confirmation email to the email associated with your account and be able to view your order details on the History screen.
Your Order Summary will be posted for each order, and your Retirement Statement(s) will also be available for download once processed.
Uploading Proof of Purchase for External EACs
If you purchased EACs from a third party, you can upload proof of purchase to each facility within the facilities tab.
Third party EAC purchases will be reflected the consumption data for each facility. For example, if your facility’s consumption is 1,000 MWh and you upload a third party EAC purchase for 500 MWh, the platform will show that you have 500 MWh left to address.
To upload third party EAC proof of purchase, click the “edit” button for a facility:
Then click the button under the action column:
Fill out all the required information and upload the retirement statement and click save.
