An Energy Attribute Certificate (EAC) is a document that proves a specific quantity of electricity was generated from a renewable source. When a wind farm, solar installation, or hydro plant produces electricity, one certificate is issued for each megawatt-hour (MWh) of clean energy fed into the grid. You can purchase these certificates separately from the electricity itself and use them to claim that the equivalent amount of clean energy was added to the grid on your behalf.
EACs go by different names in different markets: RECs in the United States, GOs (Guarantees of Origin) in Europe, REGOs in the UK, and I-RECs across Asia, Latin America, and other markets. Green Project accepts EACs from any of these schemes.
Each EAC can only be claimed by one buyer. Once retired β matched to a specific consumption claim β it's permanently cancelled and cannot be sold or used again. This retirement process is managed by independent registries that track every certificate from issuance to retirement.
π‘ EACs represent electricity added to the grid, not electricity that physically flowed to your building. The certificate gives you the right to claim the environmental benefit of that clean generation. This is a globally accepted accounting convention used by thousands of companies.
