Measure saves a bill with the service dates printed on it, then splits the usage between reporting periods by the number of days in each. This happens automatically. A bill that starts in one period and ends in the next adds usage to both.
Example
A bill runs from Dec 15 to Jan 14 (31 days) for 1,000 kWh.
Period | Days | Usage counted |
Dec 15 – Dec 31 (previous period) | 17 | 548 kWh |
Jan 1 – Jan 14 (current period) | 14 | 452 kWh |
The consumption record shows a Prorated Bill card with this split.
Why this matters
If the previous period is already reported or verified, adding the bill changes its totals. Setting active inventory periods doesn't stop this. Those settings only control which years get new emission factors. They don't lock past usage.
Keep a bill out of a closed period
Use this while you review the bill, before you import it.
On the review screen, note the prorated usage Measure shows for the current period. In the example, that's 452 kWh.
Change the start date to the first day of the current period (Jan 1).
Replace the usage with the prorated value.
Add a note so anyone checking the record later knows what you did. For example: "Bill usage (Dec 15 – Jan 14, 31 days, 1,000 kWh) prorated to this reporting period (Jan 1 – Jan 14, 14 days, 452 kWh)."
