Reselling or Distributing Products
If you buy finished products and resell or distribute them without modification, your PCF covers your operations β warehousing and transportation to your customer β rather than the upstream manufacturer's emissions. Be clear about scope in your documentation, and check with your customer about what they need.
Products in Different Sizes
Create one PCF per distinct variation where significant differences exist, or use a weighted/average approach if dimensions are minor variations. Focus on your largest sellers first and document your approach clearly.
Products with Variable Ingredients or Sourcing
Calculate based on your typical ingredient mix and document the variability. Update if sourcing changes significantly.
Products Built by Subcontractors
If you design the product but subcontractors manufacture it, you're still responsible for those supply chain emissions. Work with your subcontractors to get energy consumption, waste rates, and process details.
Products with a Use Phase
For products like vehicles or equipment that generate emissions while in use, include use-phase emissions using industry-standard methodologies with explicit assumptions. Exclude this stage where the use phase is minimal.
Products with Recycled Content
Apply lower emission factors for recycled materials, document your sourcing, and ensure you have evidence to back up any claims.
