Calculating a Product Carbon Footprint with us

Who is this for?

This is for companies that don't have an existing Product Carbon Footprint and want to calculate one directly on the platform. All you need is basic product information and a list of what goes into making it.

Step 1: Enter your product details

Provide the following information:

Field Description
Product name What you call the product
Model number / SKU Your product's model number or stock-keeping unit
Category The category that best describes your product (you can choose from broad or specific categories)
Unit or Weight Whether you sell the product by individual unit or by weight
Reference period The 12-month period for which you have production data (e.g. January 2025 – January 2026)

Step 2: Add your production facility

Enter the name, address, and country of the facility where the product is manufactured.

Step 3: Upload your Bill of Materials

The Bill of Materials (BOM) is the most important part of the calculation. It's a complete list of every material and component used to make one unit of your product — from major components to minor parts.

Important: This must reflect one unit only, not a production batch.

For example, if your product is a lanyard, your BOM would include the plastic housing, the printed card, the wire cord, and the metal clips.

Required fields:

Field Description
Part name The name of each component (e.g. aluminium sheet, nails, wooden plank)
Country of origin Where you sourced the part
Quantity How much of this part goes into one unit of your product
Quantity unit The unit of measurement for this part (may differ from the finished product's unit)

Optional fields (for greater accuracy):

Weight per unit, supplier name, detailed part specification, material type, production technology, cost per unit, cost currency, and part ID. These aren't required but improve the precision of your calculation.

Simple vs multi-level Bill of Materials

  • Simple BOM: A flat list of all parts. This is what most companies start with and is perfectly suitable for an initial calculation.
  • Multi-level BOM: For products with sub-assemblies (parts that are themselves made of other parts). This provides more granular results but requires more detailed data.

Step 4: Upload, map, and complete

  1. Upload your BOM file
  2. Map your columns to the platform's fields
  3. Correct any error rows (e.g. missing quantity units)
  4. Click Complete Import

What happens next?

Your Product Carbon Footprint will be calculated and sent for review. You'll receive either feedback requesting adjustments or confirmation that it's complete. Once approved, it appears on your profile.
