If a supplier gives us a grid-mix breakdown, do we still need EACs to report renewable electricity?
Yes, you still need to buy EACs for your entire electricity consumption if you want to report zero emissions under the market-based Scope 2 method.
A supplier’s grid mix breakdown shows the average mix of electricity sources they use overall, but unless the renewable share is backed by specific EACs that are retired for your use, you cannot claim it for your own reporting.
To report renewable electricity use, the GHG Protocol requires proof in the form of EACs. If the supplier retires certificates specifically for your consumption, and confirms this in writing, then you may not need to purchase additional EACs. Otherwise, you would need to buy them separately to cover your full electricity use.
