How do companies calculate Scope 2 emissions when they generate their own solar electricity on-site?
If you are tracking the amount of electricity your solar panels generate and you use that electricity directly on-site, then you can report zero Scope 2 emissions for that portion, as long as you have not sold any associated certificates like RECs or GOs.
The generation data from your meters or solar inverters is enough to calculate how much renewable electricity you’ve consumed. You simply subtract that amount from your total electricity use when calculating your Scope 2 emissions.
For example, if you consume 100 MWh of electricity in a year and 30 MWh of that comes from your own solar panels, you can report zero emissions for those 30 MWh. You would only need to account for the remaining 70 MWh using certificates or grid factors.
Just make sure you keep records of the generation data and confirm that no certificates have been sold from your system.
