Renewable Energy Certificates (EACs)
Why does renewable energy matter?
For most businesses, electricity consumption is one of the largest sources of emissions — often making up the majority of Scope 2 emissions. When that electricity comes from fossil fuels, every kilowatt-hour adds to your footprint and, by extension, to your customer's supply chain emissions.
Switching to renewable energy is one of the most impactful steps a company can take. It's also increasingly a requirement, not a nice-to-have. Customers, regulators, and ESG frameworks are all moving in the same direction: suppliers who can demonstrate they're powered by clean energy have a competitive advantage, while those who can't may be at risk of losing business.
What are EACs?
Environmental Attribute Certificates (EACs) are the simplest way to meet renewable energy requirements. Here's how they work:
When a wind farm or solar farm generates electricity, a certificate is created for each unit of clean energy produced. You can purchase these certificates, and each one lets you claim that clean energy was added to the grid on your behalf.
This isn't just an accounting exercise. Every certificate represents real, clean energy that was generated. By purchasing EACs, you're directly funding renewable energy production and driving demand for more of it. It's a globally recognised mechanism used by companies of all sizes.
What EACs do for you
- Reduce your Scope 2 emissions on your reported footprint
- Meet your customer's renewable energy requirements
- Strengthen your supplier profile and competitive positioning
- Contribute to the broader energy transition
Your customer's requirements
Your customer's specific renewable energy requirements are displayed in this section — for example, the percentage of your energy that must come from renewable sources. Meeting these requirements directly improves your standing as a supplier and can open the door to new business.
How to meet the requirements using act50
We've built a tool called act50 to handle the process for you.
If you already buy clean energy: Upload your proof (e.g. your renewable energy contract or existing certificates) and you're done.
If you don't buy clean energy yet: act50 will build a bundle of renewable energy certificates tailored to your needs:
- Tell us how much energy you use
- Click Buy
- You're guaranteed to meet your customer's requirements
There is a fee associated with purchasing certificates. The entire process is handled on the platform — no complex procurement, no switching energy providers, no lengthy setup.
