Facility Traits

And how Measure uses them to select emission factors

Facility traits to always fill in

Facility tags should carry as much location and type information as you have. These traits drive emission factor selection and estimates.

facility_type

Your own description of the facility

For US facilities, us_egrid is determined from the ZIP code. Your Green Project team can look this up for you.

Estimating missing electricity and natural gas

When a facility is missing actual electricity or natural gas data, Measure can estimate it from the building type and floor area, using average energy use intensities per square foot. To turn this on for a facility, add three traits:

Trait

Description

bpd_facility_type

The building type, from Measure's list

bpd_category

The broader building category for that type

bpd_sector

The sector for that type

The values for these traits, and the energy use intensities behind the estimate, come from the Building Performance Database (BPD), the US Department of Energy’s public database of measured building energy use.

Each building type belongs to exactly one category and sector, so once the building type is chosen the other two follow from it. Because the estimates are calculated per square foot, make sure the facility also has a floor area metric. See Metrics in Measure.

These traits are in addition to facility_type. Keep your own facility_type as well.

Choosing a building type

  • Offices use Office.

  • Commercial buildings of unknown type use All Commercial.

  • Residential buildings of unknown type use All Residential, as do employee commuting and work-from-home.

  • Warehouses can use All Warehouse/Storage, Distribution Center, Non-Refrigerated Warehouse, Refrigerated Warehouse or Self-Storage Facility. Use Distribution Center for upstream and downstream transportation and distribution unless the site is refrigerated.

  • Don't use Other - Other or Other - Residential. Use the matching "All" type instead.

When fuel type is unknown, Measure assumes natural gas for the non-electric portion of the estimate.
