Can tenants claim renewable energy benefits when their landlord purchases and retires Guarantees of Origin?

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Yes, if the landlord buys and retires Guarantees of Origin (GOs) for the building's electricity use, tenants can claim the renewable energy benefit for their portion of consumption.

To do this correctly:

The landlord must confirm that the GOs are retired on behalf of the tenants.

You, as the tenant, should receive documentation or a statement showing your share of the renewable energy and the associated GOs.

This allows you to report zero market-based Scope 2 emissions for that electricity use. If there's no proof or GO retirement on your behalf, you can't make the renewable claim.
