Setting, Validating and Tracking Targets in Green Project

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Setting Your Targets Step-by-Step

  1. Log in and navigate to Targets or Science-Based Targets

  2. Select your baseline year — typically your most recent complete emissions data. Green Project calculates your baseline emissions intensity.

  3. Choose whether to set absolute or intensity reduction targets (most suppliers choose intensity)

  4. Set your near-term target (typically 42% reduction for 1.5°C alignment by 2030) and select which Scopes are covered

  5. Set your long-term 2050 net-zero target

Green Project will flag if any criteria aren’t met and suggest adjustments.

Validating with SBTi

Once your targets are set in Green Project:

  1. Use the SBTi checklist to confirm all criteria are met

  2. Download your target statement

  3. Secure internal approval from board or executive level

  4. Submit to SBTi for formal validation

  5. Track progress annually in Green Project

Sample Target Statement

“We are committed to reducing our corporate emissions by 42% (per £M revenue) by 2030 from a 2021 baseline, with a pathway to net-zero by 2050. This target covers Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions and aligns with the 1.5°C climate science pathway recommended by the Science Based Targets Initiative.”

💡 SBT-aligned targets require real action — a 42% reduction is significant. But you have 5–10 years to reach your near-term target. Start with quick wins: energy efficiency, renewable energy, supply chain engagement. Green Project helps you set ambitious targets and track progress every step of the way.

Tracking Progress Year-Over-Year

Each year after you submit your emissions data, log in and navigate to Your Targets or Progress Dashboard. Your dashboard shows your baseline emissions, target emissions, current emissions, remaining reduction needed, years until the target date, and the annual reduction rate required.

If your emissions are declining and you’re on track, great. If they’re increasing or not reducing fast enough, the dashboard will flag this so you can adjust.

Using the AI Co-Pilot

Green Project’s AI Co-Pilot analyses your emissions breakdown, identifies your top emissions drivers, and suggests tailored reduction initiatives based on your industry and situation — estimating the potential impact of each one.

  • Suggestions typically include:

  • Energy efficiency improvements (heating, cooling, lighting)

  • Renewable energy purchasing

  • Supply chain optimisation

  • Process improvements

  • Employee engagement on commuting and travel

  • Product redesign

Review the suggestions, add initiatives that align with your strategy to your decarbonisation roadmap, and track their implementation and estimated savings.

Setting Up Reduction Initiatives

For each initiative, record the name, a description of what you’ll do, the expected reduction in tCO2e or percentage, the timeline, and the responsible owner. As you implement, mark milestones as complete, update actual savings, and adjust timelines as needed.

Green Project sums all initiatives against your 2030 target and identifies any gaps. Use your progress dashboard to report to your customer, communicate internally, and maintain accountability with other stakeholders.
